Little ones aged 2-5 are sure to love these books.
Some of these favourites take centre stage in their own books such as Schnitzel von Krumm, Dogs Never Climb Trees, meaning there is plenty to discover for fans of the dimunitive dog and his friends.
In each book, we meet Hairy Maclary’s friends: dogs of all shapes and sizes with wonderful names - “Bottomley Potts covered in spots”, “Hercules Morse as big as a horse” and “Schnitzel von Krumm with a very low tum”, as well as cats for him to chase including the equally mischievous Slinky Malinki and his arch-enemy, the bullying tom cat Scarface Claw. The clever rhymes and colourful language make these books a joy to read aloud with lines like “Hairy Maclary felt bumptious and bustly, bossy and bouncy and frisky and hustly" and the rhythm and repetition encourages children to join in too. The success of the books lies in the wonderful, sing-song rhythm and verse along with the vivid illustrations of dogs and cats. Written and illustrated by award-winning New Zealand author Lynley Dodd, this series of twenty picture books has been around for thirty five years and is still going strong. Today, Lynley is a big fan of Quentin Blake 'because of his humour and very clever art work.Hairy Maclary is a bouncy, scruffy and mischievous dog whose cheeky adventures with his lovable animal friends (and enemies!) enrapture toddlers, pre-schoolers and their parents. It comes as no surprise that, as a child, she adored Dr Seuss because of his 'crazy sounds and the fact that he took such liberties with the English language.' Other favourite authors included A A Milne and the fairy tales of The Grimm Brothers and Hans Christian Andersen. As well as being a visual delight, these are some of the most rewarding books for children and adults to read out loud. Exuberant artwork and bouncy rhymes come together perfectly in books like Slinky Malinki and Hairy Maclary from Donaldson's Dairy.
There was no looking back as Lynley went on to write and illustrate her own books for children. She began to work as a freelance illustrator and collaborated with author Eve Sutton on My Cat Likes To Hide in Boxes. She went on to teach art before taking a break to start a family.
Lynley Dodd graduated from the Elam School of Art in Auckland with a diploma in Fine Arts, majoring in sculpture.
